quality of life.

In a growing body of research that has investigated exercise in cancer patients, dramatic improvements in physiologic and psychological functioning have been documented in patients participating in exercise programs.

Evidence has been reported on the benefits of exercise for survivors, including:

  • cancer related fatigue
  • physical functioning
  • body weight and composition
  • muscle strength and endurance
  • immune function
  • cardiovascular fitness

The authors of a 2019 study concluded that meeting the minimum guidelines for physical activity, both before diagnosis and after treatment, appears to be associated with statistically significantly reduced hazards of recurrence and mortality among breast cancer patients.

  • For cancer survivors, incorporating exercise helps improve survival after a diagnosis of breast, colon and prostate cancer.
  • Exercising during and after cancer treatment improves fatigue, anxiety, depression, physical function, quality of life and does not exacerbate lymphedema.

According to the National Cancer Institute: Good nutrition is important for cancer patients.Nutrition is a process in which food is taken in and used by the body for growth, to keep the body healthy, and to replace tissue. Good nutrition is important for good health. A healthy diet includes foods and liquids that have important nutrients (vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fat, and water) the body needs.

Healthy eating habits are important during and after cancer treatment.

A diet with a focus on plant-based foods along with regular exercise will help cancer patients keep a healthy body weight, maintain strength, and decrease side effects both during and after treatment.
